A love letter (for my first country, VietNam) Twenty-six Falls have elapsed Since the day we bade farewell. I was leaving you as the hostilities raged on And you, you remained engulfed in the war. Then came April 1975 – the month of misfortune I learned of your defeat. The invading communist pirates Sowed suffering everywhere, And you my love, you valiantly fought in the prisons, Against hunger and misery. From the arch of Nam Quan to the Ca Mau point, Those bloody tortures you suffered for the last fourteen years Continue to destroy piece by piece your already thin frame! Gone forever this native country with its green mountains and its blue seas, Also never to return the freedom of actions under spacious skies, Those cities, those animated dwellings, This joyous peace-loving people. O my Vietnam! No more of the carefree days of yore. You still suffer, enveloped by ignominy and hatred While on a foreign land I cry silently in my heart laden with regrets! Our separation though, by no means becomes final. Remember, you shall rise again in uproar To fly the flag, to regain our land. As you are the beloved “Fatherland” for all the Vietnamese people, My vow is to remain your lover, Missing and loving Vietnam for all of eternity. (Huynh Dung- 1989) |
